Hubbs Center, SPPS -- St. Paul VISTA Program
Saint Paul Public Schools Adult Basic Education (SPPS ABE/Hubbs Center) is the largest ABE school of its kind in Minnesota, serving approximately 1,600 under-served, low-literacy adults each week from the Saint Paul community. Our population of students includes both immigrants/refugees and US-born Americans who lack a high school or college education, and the age of students can start at 16. The mission of SPPS ABE is to provide students with educational opportunities to acquire and improve their literacy skills necessary to be self-sufficient and to participate effectively as productive workers, family members, and citizens. The purpose of the AmeriCorps VISTA project is to significantly improve recruitment and outreach efforts among adults within our program and within our community who may benefit from career pathways. SPPS ABE/ Hubbs Center provide programming in General Educational Development (GED) preparation, college preparation, English Language Learning (ELL), distance learning and occupational preparation. We currently run 15 occupational preparation classes including grant-driven career pathway programming. Some of those classes are Carpentry Prep, Commercial Drivers License, Child Development, Emergency Medical Services, Medical Office Prep, Nursing Assistant Preparation, Retail/Customer Service, ServSafe Food Safety and Low Pressure Boiler License. SPPS ABE works to provide full services and support to students by working collaboratively with other community-based organizations through the St. Paul Community Literacy Consortium (SPCLC). **This VISTA position is sponsored by the Saint Paul VISTA Program. Hosted in Mayor Chris Coleman's Office, the Saint Paul VISTA Program is comprised of a city-wide cohort of individuals -- placed at community organizations and schools -- dedicated to shaping the educational landscape for youth and families in Saint Paul.**
