Science Museum of Minnesota -- St. Paul VISTA Program

The Museum Access AmeriCorps member will increase the Science Museum of Minnesota’s capacity to successfully engage low-income families and families of color from Saint Paul in high quality informal science learning opportunities by strengthening internal communication and developing external relationships with families and organizations that serve families. The member will build the organization’s capacity to serve more St. Paul families and individuals through its limited-income discount programs. The member will serve closely with KAYSC staff to build the department’s capacity to serve more children of St. Paul families through its college and career access programming. The mission of the Science Museum of Minnesota is Turn on the Science: Engaging policy makers, educators, and individuals to achieve full civic and economic participation in the world. The Kitty Andersen Youth Science Center is a SMM department whose target audience is youth who are from backgrounds underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers - primarily girls (60% of participants), youth of color (90%), and youth from low-income families (75%). Many are also new Americans or children of new Americans. We work toward a future in which young women and people of color make up the majority of researchers, policy makers, educators, innovators and leaders in science and technology fields. By joining this project you will serve at the leading edge of informal science learning, youth development, and community engagement. Come build the Science Museum of Minnesota’s capacity to engage ALL people in meaningful learning experiences. **This VISTA position is sponsored by the Saint Paul VISTA Program. Hosted in Mayor Chris Coleman's Office, the Saint Paul VISTA Program is comprised of a city-wide cohort of individuals -- placed at community organizations and schools -- dedicated to shaping the educational landscape for youth and families in Saint Paul.**
