OASHF- Jackson County Weekend Backpack Program
 
 
 
Jackson Summer Free Lunch for Kids is an organization founded six years ago by Carol Downton, a retired school teacher who identified the need to feed children over the summers when school-based breakfasts and lunches were not available. The program successfully operates several sites in the City of Jackson. The program has identified a need to develop a weekend back program to serve children during the weekends, the highest-risk time for low-income families,since children are served meals during schooldays but families often lack resources for weekends. Jackson Summer Free Lunch for Kids is partnering with COAD, the Corporation for Ohio Appalachian Development, whose mission is to support poverty-stricken citizens in rural Appalachian Ohio.

Member Duties : The VISTAs will work within the community to develop resources, research best practices, recruit volunteers, and develop and operationalize a weekend backpack program in the school districts identified within the service area. They will create an infrastructure which will ensure a sustainable program going forward.
