OASHF- Gabriel's Place

Gabriel's Place (www.gabrielsplace.diosohio.org) seeks to fulfill the common goal of becoming a sustainable community space in the neighborhood of Avondale in Cincinnati. Spearheaded by the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio, this is a collaboration of an inner city neighborhood's community council and redevelopment corporation with funders, health care providers and health advocacy groups, urban gardeners, educational institutions, and volunteers. Using the renovated parish hall and spacious yard of a former parish church in an inner-city neighborhood, Gabriel's Place staff and stakeholders are developing: - A community garden to facilitate education, whole foods, social interaction and a source of food for other programs - A hoop house raising fish and fresh produce year round for the Market, local restaurants and community residents - A community kitchen that will support small businesses, host cooking classes, and provide free lunch on a weekly basis - A marketplace that will encourage economic empowerment, access to whole foods and goods, social interaction and a source of pride - Community space for social service agencies to interact with residents

Member Duties : The VISTA will strengthen the partnerships needed to foster and sustain community gardening, cooking classes, and a farmer's market in Avondale, an urban neighborhood with no grocery store and high rates of infant mortality, obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. The VISTA will be a matchmaker, finding ways to bring together people who love to garden and cook and people who could greatly benefit from learning these skills, and doing it in a way that is fun and mutually rewarding. Working to develop a farmer's market with a strong enough neighborhood customer base that the vendors keep coming is a key aspect of this work. Writing grant proposals or seeking in-kind donations for the cooking gear, seeds, and other program inputs is also significant. This position requires resourcefulness and the ability to improvise. This very challenging assignment could prove a marvelous internship in social entrepreneurship.
