Churches Active In Northside - CAIN - is a 501(c)3 non profit collaborative ministry of neighborhood churches that feeds bodies and souls, cares for children and builds community to give Help for Today Hope for Tomorrow. CAIN encourages neighborhood residents to improve their lives and neighborhood by: - Feeding bodies and souls: Each month CAIN's Choice Pantry provides over 350 low-income families with basic necessities like food; emergency financial assistance for rent and utilities; household and hygiene items; diapers; transportation assistance and referrals for furniture and baby items. CAIN meets with each person individually. - Caring for Children: CAIN provides cultural enrichment for young children through free Kids Corner art activities during evening pantry hours. CAIN supports teens through summer employment projects and Teen Service Board. - Building Community: CAIN works directly with Northside civic organizations to strengthen bonds between residents. CAIN coordinates and participates in community events including the Fourth of July Celebration, Northside Farmers Market and Annual Northside Community-Wide Yard Sale. (Best of the City by Cincinnati Magazine 2008) Other Highlights: CAIN earned Top-rated Food and Shelter Award, hosted by GreatNonprofits, Care2, Feeding America, the National Alliance to End Homelessness, the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth, the National Coalition for the Homeless, and Guidestar. Ratings were submitted by members of the public who have volunteered, donated, or been served by the nonprofits. (2011, 2010, 2009) CAIN is a host site for The Benefit Bank a Web-based, counselor-assisted program that connects help low- and moderate-income Ohioans claim tax credits, public benefits and work supports for which they are eligible. Recognized as an Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks' 2004 Agency of the Year for the Freestore Foodbank.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will help develop, organize and implement CAIN's Healthy Food For All program, securing resources to increase its sustainability. In addition, this project will concentrate on the development of EBT/SNAP utilization at the weekly Northside Farmers Market. Day to day responsibilities will focus on the following areas: Expanding CAIN's Choice Food Pantry nutrition education and create a format to organize and develop the program; Increase availability of produce by connecting the food pantry with at least one additional source of produce; - Coordinate and manage CAIN's community garden, Northside Farmers Market (NFM) booth (soliciting donations, educating customers and running EBT machine for the market), and weekly Freestore Foodbank produce pickups; - Secure resources to increase utilization of EBT/SNAP at Northside Farmers Market (NFM) including marketing plan, social media and research and submit grants for Northside Farmers Market.
