OASHF- Franklinton Gardens-Community Garden
 
 
 
We are a nonprofit urban farm located in Franklinton--a historic neighborhood on the west side of Columbus, Ohio. We are dedicated to growing and sharing healthy food, creating beauty in abandoned places, promoting nutrition and active living, and building a just and peaceable community with our neighbors. Started in 2007 as a lone community garden on a small vacant lot, Franklinton Gardens has since developed into a thriving network of gardens and food production sites scattered throughout the neighborhood's urban landscape. In addition to our organic food production efforts, we offer a wide range of garden-based activities, educational programs, and employment opportunities in order to empower neighbors and build a healthy community.

Member Duties : VISTA member will be helping Franklinton Gardens to further establish the community gardening aspect of their work. This will involve community engagement, working with community partners to inform residents of plot garden, development of a campaign to recruit individuals, grant writing, securing materials, equipment, and personnel needed to sustain a thriving community garden. This will also involve assisting in the development of a community gardening mentorship program. This will include developing a structured garden mentor program to connect novice gardeners to more experienced gardeners within the neighborhood to use as a resource to grow their own food. Lastly, a VISTA member will work with identified outdoor cooking chefs and masons to plan a wood-fired oven based on the site layout. This will eventually be a "victory" kitchen type model in which community residents will work together to prepare and share meals in this outdoor space.
