OASHF- The Foodbank, Inc. Volunteer Coordinator

The Foodbank supports hunger relief efforts in our community by acquiring and distributing food through a network of 81 food pantries, emergency shelters, and prepared meal programs throughout Montgomery, Greene, and Preble counties. The Foodbank obtains mass quantities of food, including dry and canned goods, fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, meat and poultry, and dairy, through commodities, donations and bulk food purchases. The food is transported to our warehouse where it is sorted, checked for freshness, inventoried, and distributed according to our member agencies' needs. The Foodbank provides a unique service that is essential to the hunger relief efforts of our member pantries, shelters and prepared meal providers. They rely on The Foodbank to stock their shelves with food every week. The Foodbank also maintains a database of recalled food items and trains member agencies in safe food serving practices. Originally operating as an emergency food bank under the Red Cross, the agency has been serving our community for three decades. In 2004 the agency became an independent non-profit, The Foodbank, Inc., committed to relieving hunger through the acquisition and distribution of food to hungry people in the Miami Valley. We are the only organization of this kind in the community. In addition to food acquisition and distribution, The Foodbank addresses the nutritional needs of targeted at-risk populations of children through two programs: the Kids Café, which provides food for children in after-school programs, and Good-to Go Backpacks, which provides food for the weekend for children in grades K-8. The Foodbank is a Better Business Bureau accredited charity and meets the BBB's 20 Standards for Charity Accountability. The Foodbank is a member of the national organization Feeding America, the nation's food bank network, and the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks.
