OASHF- Oberlin Community Services Volunteer Coordinator

Founded in 1955, Oberlin Community Services (OCS) is a responsive community organization that provides direct assistance, referrals, and other services to Oberlin area residents and groups who need help in meeting basic needs. Our staff is small but remarkably dedicated and efficient. By the measure of clients served more than 6424 unduplicated individuals in 2010-2011 we are the largest 'safety-net' agency in southern Lorain County. The OCS Emergency Assistance Program provides a safety net for Oberlin's most disadvantaged residents through aid with food, utility bills, rent and mortgage payments, prescriptions, transportation, and clothing. Our service region includes the City of Oberlin and ten nearby townships: Brighton, Camden, Carlisle, Huntington, Lagrange, New Russia, Penfield, Pittsfield, Rochester and Wellington. OCS provides one-on-one afterschool tutoring and in-classroom assistance, positively affecting the math instruction of more than 75 percent of Oberlin school children in grades three through eight. This academic year to date, trained OCS tutors have logged more than 2000 hours of service at Langston Middle and Prospect Elementary Schools. Additionally, we have persisted in providing support for the regular courses and test prep classes at Oberlin High's summer school, serving upwards of 80 teenagers. We also have a large community garden in order to increase the amount of fresh produce we offer as well as to use as an educational opportunity to teach organic gardening skills.
