Yakima (NWH) Summer Associate 2016

Host Site: Northwest Harvest in Yakima works with food banks and feeding programs in central Washington. Being an area with abundance of agriculture, the Summer Associate will coordinate produce donations with a large farm to increase produce distributed to the emergency feeding system. The Summer Associate will work in collaboration with the Northwest Harvest staff and volunteers from the community to capture as much fresh produce as possible during the summer. Project Background: Harvest Against Hunger (HAH), a program of Rotary First Harvest, connects local growers, food banks and volunteers to secure fresh produce for distribution to thousands of people throughout Washington State. HAH finds new and innovative ways to decrease waste of fresh fruits and vegetables and increase the availability of nutritious produce for food bank clients. The Summer VISTA Associate program will enhance the existing HAH VISTA project by providing individuals who will work in an intensive level of summer service for 10 weeks alongside the year-round Harvest VISTA members. The SVAs will work to start or support existing food bank, community or school garden projects. Projects will focus on strengthening connections with schools, use educational curriculum and summer feeding programs.
