Harvest Against Hunger (Summer VISTA Associate)- Yakima

Project Background: Harvest Against Hunger (HAH), a program of Rotary First Harvest, connects local growers, food banks and volunteers to secure fresh produce for distribution to thousands of people throughout Washington State. HAH finds new and innovative ways to decrease waste of fresh fruits and vegetables and increase the availability of nutritious produce for food bank clients. The Summer VISTA Associate program will enhance the existing HAH VISTA project by providing individuals who will work in an intensive level of summer service for 10 weeks alongside the year-round Harvest VISTA members. The SVAs will work to start or support existing food bank, community or school garden projects. Projects will focus on strengthening connections with schools, use educational curriculum and summer feeding programs. Host Site: Northwest Harvest in Yakima works with 51 food banks and feeding programs in central Washington. Being an area with abundance of agriculture, the VISTA will coordinate gleaning events with the orchardist or farmer, volunteers who will harvest the produce and then arrange the return of the product to the warehouse or food bank for distribution. The VISTA will work in collaboration with the Northwest Harvest staff and volunteers from the community to capture as much fresh produce as possible during this time. The VISTA will be working within existing relationships built by previous VISTAs as well as introduce new possibilities of contacts. During this time there would be opportunities for harvesting cherries, blueberries, stone fruit and row crops.
