Higher Achievement VISTA- Student Support and Services

Our research-based program challenges middle school students to meet their full potential in three key areas: academics, social skills, and leadership. When students get the skills and support they need to invest in their own success, they discover that they can be scholars. On average, 95 percent of Higher Achievement scholars who complete the program advance to top academic high schools and 93 percent advance to college. Higher Achievement succeeds because of the dedication of our mentors and study hall aides, who are volunteers from the community and local businesses. For the After-School Academy, each scholar is teamed with three mentors, one for each core subject. These mentors provide academic guidance and personal support. Higher Achievement mentors are role models with varied backgrounds. Some grew up in the same communities as the scholars they mentor; others grew up in more affluent communities. Some live in the city; others commute from the suburbs. Together, the mentors build a rich community that exposes Higher Achievement scholars to new perspectives and many forms of support. Studies have shown that children with mentors reduced their number of referrals to the principals office by more than half over the course of one year. Further, school-based mentoring has been shown to increase attachment to school and decrease fighting in school, and increase their likelihood of attending college. Education is the way to eliminating poverty for the next generation.
