Washington County Volunteer Program Specialist

A community's stability is often measured by the needs of its most vulnerable populations and for Washington County, the percentage of children and seniors living in poverty grew at an alarming rate from 2000 to 2008. In those eight years, poverty increased by 70% in children under the age of 18 and by 82% in seniors over age 65. The demand for youth and senior services have steadily increased while the availability of funding has declined, resulting in programs relying on volunteer service to provide the necessary bridge. The Volunteer Center at the United Way of Johnson County provides direct capacity building services to nonprofit organizations and volunteer programs to help meet the needs of the community and provides the Emergency Volunteer Center program to connect volunteers with disaster-related needs and recovery. This program will focus on increasing youth involvement in volunteering and engagement, increasing capacity for recruitment and developing volunteer initiatives and programming to address issues of poverty.
