NC Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA

The North Carolina Campus Compact AmeriCorpsVISTA program places VISTAs with community and campus host sites to build partnerships that assist low-income communities by leveraging higher education resources. The great recession and globalizing economy have hurt many North Carolinians: over 17 percent of citizens and nearly 25 percent of children in the state are in poverty, according to 2010 U.S. Census Bureau reports. NC also has one of the strongest and most diverse higher education sectors in the nation. NC Campus Compact VISTAs help connect this strength to poverty-related needs, supporting higher education's mission of civic engagement and the VISTA mission of fighting poverty by bringing campus resources to community partners serving people in need. VISTA projects focus on areas such as education, economic opportunity, healthy futures, and veterans & military families. VISTA assignments often include community organizing, fund-raising or grant-writing, volunteer recruitment and training, creating asset-maps and conducting needs assessment, developing data systems to track impact, and developing policies and procedures that increase agency effectiveness. VISTAs may also facilitate service-learning placements, community-based research or volunteer opportunities that support low-income communities. NC Campus Compact is a growing coalition of 42 public, independent and community colleges and universities. Presidents and chancellors commit their institutions to being "engaged campuses" that enhance a student's sense of responsibility, citizenship, leadership and awareness of community, and impact the community by partnering with local organizations to address real needs.

Member Duties : The NC Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA will work with community agencies and campus actors to address community needs in one of four areas: education, economic opportunity, healthy futures, or veterans. Building partnerships with persistently underperforming K-12 schools is a special emphasis. VISTAs lead projects that build a community partner'capacity to fight poverty. A VISTA may work to: * develop volunteer recruitment and training strategies and materials * create data systems to manage people and performance * assess community needs and strengths * develop community and campus leadership teams around issues of concern * raise funds and write grants * plan events * raise public awareness through communications strategies.
