Washington Adv. Univ. First Generation Ambassadors Program
 
 
 
The First-Generation Ambassadors Program (FGAP) is designed to provide support to first-generation students of Washington Adventist University (WAU), through mentorship, workshops, and building a strong partnership with parents. First-Generation students are, by definition, undergraduates whose parents never enrolled in post-secondary education. Currently, 37% of WAU's traditional student population is comprised of this demographic. This new program include students and a program VISTA member who will: 1) Select the Ambassadors; 2) Facilitate workshops for the Ambassadors aimed at supporting their adjustment to college life. Workshops have focused on study skills, financial literacy, navigating the campus, social relationships and other issues pertinent to these students. 3) Facilitate interactions with parents by preparing a parent newsletter 5) Coordinate service projects in collaboration with Adventist Community Service of Greater Washington (ACSGW), which will help eliminate poverty; and is in the process of 6) Identify funding sources (i.e., scholarships and grants) for the Ambassadors so they can focus on their academic achievement while in college 7) Pair FGAP students with first generation high school students to mentor these high school students and help support their transition to college.
