Shenandoah University

Motivated and energetic, VISTAs will make a difference in lives: assist in the collaboration of Shenandoah University and Our Health (a large non-profit organization dedicated to providing myriad services to the community), expand capacity for matching students with service opportunities and tracking results. The VISTAs will help hundreds of students create profiles, help nonprofits design and develop volunteer management programs including volunteer opportunities, and identify and manage crucial system(s) for tracking effectiveness of volunteer matchmaking and outcomes of service. Winchester's populations of concentrated poverty experience related problems of poor education and skills, poor health and nutrition, and poor physical environments. VISTAs will address organizational capacity matching SU students with appropriate service opportunities to combat poverty, bringing new labor and enthusiasm to community service efforts. VISTAs will work closely with existing non-profit agencies to tailor volunteer programs that fit for students and which make a direct difference for impoverished families. VISTAs will help nonprofit staff adjust their programs to make maximal use of student volunteerism. VISTAs will reach out to students, individually and in their clubs, teams, and ensembles, to stoke interest and understanding for service. VISTAs will help make matches between motivated students and appropriate antipoverty service opportunities. The proposed project will make a lasting and sustainable increase in Center for Public Service and Scholarship"s capacity to connect students to service opportunities making a serious impact on poverty in Winchester. This process will involve outreach, networking, and program design, the formation of an advisory board of low-income community members, and initial coordination between students, nonprofit leaders, and poverty communities.
