Washburn University/El Centro of Topeka

The mission of El Centro of Topeka is to improve the lives of families and individuals through education and empowerment. El Centro of Topeka is one of the few organizations in Topeka that provides culturally sensitive assistance to low income Hispanic families. Since opening its doors in 1972 the goal has been to be a trusted community resource center for individuals and families in need of help. Many of our clients speak very limited English and lack familiarity with programs and resources available to them. The following are the 2 programs currently offered by El Centro. Our longest running program at El Centro has been the Community Resource program, which provides awareness to struggling families regarding local resources in our community in a culturally sensitive environment with a bilingual staff. Our services include but are not limited to translations, interpretations and community referrals. Our office is normally the first phone number dialed when an immigrant family is dealing with a difficult issue and haven’t been able to find help. We have been working closely with Washburn School of Nursing to provide free health screenings and health education in the community through our mobile health clinic. The demand and success of the mobile clinic has propelled our health initiative to grow from preventative healthcare to primary care. El Centro along with Washburn nursing school is working with St. Francis to bring a nurse practitioner as well.
