Urban Farm Educator Position
 
 
 
VISTA members will work with the Missouri River Communities Network and the Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture to develop and strengthen their capacity to grow, process, package and sell healthy food in an urban setting and help residents and community volunteers develop the skills to participate in this effort. VISTA's will: build the capacity of the farm to intensively grow large amounts of food on a 1.3 acre property located in Columbia/Boone County, MO, in a 50% low income urban area with no grocery stores within 1 mile of the Farm site; develop and manage an Urban Farmer's Market that will sell the food grown onsite and from other urban farms to local residents and restaurants; develop an Urban Farm / Farmer's Market Manual which will be used to help people in other locations duplicate the Urban Farming model in their own community; develop a Food Safety Plan for safely growing, harvesting, washing, packaging and selling the produce and then oversee implementation of that plan. Other activities each year will include: host 24 urban agriculture college credit University of Missouri interns; organize and present 46 educational "local food related workshops"; help design, and raise the funds to install 5 Opportunity (food) Gardens for residents of Public Housing in Columbia; give 30 Urban Farm Tours to interested citizens who want to learn more about urban farming; organize and implement: 24 free Urban Farm/ Farmers Market Potluck suppers, organize 45 volunteer workdays where at least 400 volunteers perform 2000 hours of labor; organize 2 Seasonal "festival" Events highlighting the success of the Urban Farm (these will also be fundraising events); enhance the farm website; publish 6 Project newsletters; expand social networking; help build a revenue generating self-sustaining urban farm operation.

Member Duties : Connect with interested parties to schedule and implement special group tours. Market to interested organizations; coordinate all tour logistics (record, track and file number and age of participants, organization, etc.). Develop various educational farm tours, workshops, and project experiences (depending upon age and specific interest) with information about the farm and the mission of CCUA. Create interpretive signs at the Urban Farm. Create, coordinate, and implement a variety of educational programs at the Urban Farm. Build relationships in the Columbia community to facilitate partnerships in farm-based education. Contribute to the development of educational materials for CCUA. Help develop teaching areas at the Urban Farm including the Children’s Garden.
