NEED: Children who are not school ready when they enter kindergarten are unlikely to catch up to their classmates in subsequent grades. In fact, the achievement gap grows as they continue in school and they become more likely to fail or repeat grades, be placed in special education, or drop out of school. National research shows that nearly 50% of children experience moderate to serious problems transitioning into kindergarten RESPONSE: 63 AmeriCorps Members serve in 11 diverse counties, providing crucial skill-building activities to 2-5 year olds who are at risk for low performance upon kindergarten entry. Members engage children in direct developmental activities to help children gain access to the knowledge and skills necessary for success. AMERICORPS POSITIONS: Home Visitors - Members work with families in their home through activities tailored to the childs age and individual need. Preschool Classrooms - Members work to strengthen literacy, numeracy and social-emotional development through one-on-one and small group activities. Family Resource Centers Members educate families on positive parent-child interaction and child development through community playgroups. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 993 Members have served over 17,500 children by providing school readiness services and activities. Two thirds of children served increased their developmental skills for school readiness by 20% or more. Over 8,500 parents and caregivers received child development education and support

Member Duties : Home Visitors - Members work with families in their home through activities tailored to the childs age and individual need. Home Visits include activities that promote early literacy and numeracy, and promote positive parent-child interaction. Preschool Classrooms - Members work to strengthen literacy, numeracy and social-emotional development through one-on-one and small group activities. By creating and implementing curricula based on the specific needs of the individual child, members ensure that children are given the tools to succeed. Family Resource Centers Members educate families on positive parent-child interaction and child development through community playgroups. Family Resource Center activities are designed to strengthen family connections and encourage parental involvement in the academic and social success of the child.
