West Valley Outdoor Learning Center

The West Valley Outdoor Learning Center’s (WVOLC) mission is to provide opportunities for young people to investigate and learn about the world around them. We believe that through experiences with wildlife and by making connections with their natural environment, young people will gain an appreciation and a deeper understanding of the need for conservation. Currently we reach about 10,000 students in Spokane and neighboring counties through the WVOLC programs. One of our outreach programs is the Hawk and Owl Outreach Talks program which introduces student and adult audiences to the incredible world of raptor adaptations. This program also looks at different roles that specific raptors play as ecological indicators. Critical habitat issues and species of specific concern are also addressed. Students are given opportunities to see live education birds up close and build personal connections to wildlife. The WVOLC is housed on three acres of wooded land with several water features. These water features are used for numerous activities including lessons on water quality testing, aquatic bugs, and aquatic habitats. The WVOLC also participates in a trout in the classroom program in partnership with the West Valley City School. Middle school students raise trout from eggs to fry, then release the trout into our ponds. Once these trout have reached a substantial size they are released into local lakes. This program has been very successful and a great learning opportunity for all students. We are looking for a person who is interested in providing outstanding environmental education programs. This program is ongoing through the school year 2011-2012 and includes a summer program in 2012. Program delivery will occur at the West Valley Outdoor Learning Center, in area schools, at specified field locations and in community group forums throughout the Spokane and Eastern Washington area.
