Apple Corps - KCFFI Safe routes to school Organizer
 
 
 
This position places an Apple Corps Americorps member with the King County Food and Fitness initiative (KCFFI) in their school food and fitness program. The King County Food and Fitness Initiative (KCFFI) is a community coalition formed in 2006, funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to begin planning for an initiative, called Food and Fitness, launched in 2007 nationally in 9 regions around the country. The vision for the Food and Fitness Initiative is Creating vibrant communities that support access to locally grown, healthy, affordable food and safe and inviting places for physical activity and play for everyone. The MISSION of the King County Food & Fitness Initiative is to foster collaborative leadership among diverse community partners to co-create long-term, innovative strategies to realize our vision of equitable access to resources and choices that promote health. To achieve our goals, we actively engage with communities and youth in planning, decision making, and fun activities. This work is focused in Southwest Seattle in the Delridge and White Center Neighborhoods. These are two highly diverse, low income neighborhoods. The schools in these two neighborhoods serve children and families, of which, upwards of 80% of whom are living in poverty. The work of the School Food & Fitness team is to support our neighborhood schools and partners in creating safe environments and opportunities for healthy choices.

Member Duties : Responsibilities of the Safe Routes to School organizer include working on a team of School Food & Fitness staff, specializing in supporting the development of Safe Routes to School Programs. The responsibilities of the Safe Routes to School Coordinator include introducing safe walking/biking curriculum at low income schools and community based organizations, implementing school based activities (like a walk/bike to school campaign), community events, and helping to build volunteerism & partnerships to support safe streets and active transportation.
