Mason Matters/Washington Health Foundation

The mission of Mason Matters is to improve the health status and quality of life of Mason County residents, through community capacity-building efforts. The focus of the AmeriCorps project is to help at-risk families improve the health outcomes of their children. This includes developing structural support systems to help these families establish health homes. The HOPE Community Garden provides a venue for youth to engage in-school and out-of-school nutrition education. The HOPE garden is part of Mason County environmental change efforts to address childhood obesity. It is designed to serve as part of a Health Home to participating community neighborhoods, clients of service agencies, and youth. The Health Literacy curriculum targets parents of preschoolers, providing health and health care education. The Pioneer Community project is focused on helping economically disadvantaged families access needed services, including health-related services and programs. The AmeriCorps member will be working within these community programs and often spear heading their organization.
