South Sound GREEN, Thurston Conservation District

South Sound GREEN (Global Rivers Environmental Education Network) (SSG) is a watershed education program for grades 4-12+ located in Thurston County, Washington. The vision of SSG is a community with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to act as stewards of our local watersheds. Our mission is: Connecting community and schools for watershed protection. SSG is a program of Thurston Conservation District in partnership with Thurston County, the Cities of Olympia, Lacey, Tumwater and Trout Unlimited, five school districts and multiple community partners. Thurston Conservation District, site of the South Sound GREEN office, is located in Tumwater, Washington near South Puget Sound Community College. Students test for dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, nitrates, and turbidity and develop observational skills using an Illustrated Site Survey. Lab classes analyze samples for fecal coliform bacteria. Nearshore-marine education field events to South Sound shorelines include estuary studies, a plankton tow and observation of plankton, and exploration of inter-tidal and sub-tidal creatures. Volunteer training events and student/classroom action projects enhance the program. Prevention of non-point source pollution is emphasized in all SSG activities. Students have opportunities to commit to actions to protect or enhance their watershed and South Puget Sound. Students may express their experiences through art and poetry. The 21st Annual Student GREEN Congress (our watershed summit for students) will occur in March 2013! Student delegates present the results of their watershed investigations, make recommendations to improve the health of their watershed, and attend exciting hands-on skills sessions on environmental topics. SSG offers classroom sessions prior to field events: Stream ecology and water quality monitoring demonstration/practice, the Enviroscape watershed model, nearshore habitats and aquaculture, and/or Congress delegate preparation.
