King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks

King County Parks is one of the largest open space park systems in the USA. It is a complex system of 25,000 acres made up of 180 parks, 175 miles of regional trails, 130 miles of backcountry trails, working forests and natural areas. Its purpose is to manage an open space system that provides environmental benefits and recreational opportunities. This open space offers places to exercise, participate in competitive sports, socialize with others, and experience the solace of the natural environment. It provides habitat for fish and wildlife; maintains air and water quality, offers scenic beauty, and helps retain forest activities in the county. The volunteer program serves citizens by offering them opportunities to provide environmentally sound stewardship skills to maintain and enhance the parks, trails and open space they enjoy. Volunteers participate in restoration projects adjacent to river, streams and wetlands; forested floodplains; and also work on constructing and maintaining backcountry trails. There is also a strong native vegetation restoration and management component to this program. A large part of the volunteer efforts are directed at site preparation for planting, planting and maintaining native vegetation. Volunteers efforts are integral to the success of King County Parks by performing tasks that help keep the system functioning. Volunteer events are comprised of singular events as well as by regularly scheduled events sponsored by groups. Volunteers help on ball fields; regional and backcountry trails; parks; restoration sites; and natural areas. The Volunteer Program works to increase volunteerism while creating and maintaining relationships with civic, corporate and community partners.
