University of Southern Maine - Maine Campus Compact

The MCC VISTA at the University of Southern Maine (USM) will serve as a program coordinator of after school programs. The VISTA will engage the USM students in providing after school support to K-12 students in neighborhood and school-based programs for persistence and success in school and aspirations for higher education. USM is a comprehensive public university of about 10,000 in Portland, Maine. This vibrant, diverse city is a point of entry for immigrants from all over the world. Immigrant families, along with others, may struggle to gain a social and economic foothold. Partner programs serve students from families who have immigrated from Somalia, Sudan, Congo, and more, as well as Maine-born students who are economically disadvantaged. This work is part of a larger program of service, service-learning, and internships that engage USM students in active learning while mobilizing them to meet community-identified needs.
