AmeriCorps, Monterey County United for Literacy

Recognizing the critical, academic challenges many young students face, the mission of the AmeriCorps, Monterey County United for Literacy program is to enable Monterey County children to read well and independently by the end of the third grade so that they can read to learn in the fourth grade and beyond. Academic and creative achievements will be available to children if they are able to read, take pleasure in reading, and are well-prepared for the academic rigor that begins at fourth grade. The Corps members strive to mobilize and link school and community resources to increase reading fluency in children and to promote the appreciation for reading in the family and in the community. The program targets children in Kindergarten through 4th grade in Salinas and in South Monterey County, a region where two-thirds of all K-4 students read below grade level. 30 members will provide one-to-one and small group tutoring to a minimum of 515 children in kindergarten through fourth grade to help them improve their English language development, vocabulary acquisition, fluency and comprehension AND develop the habit of independent reading. The program targets students whose reading achievement is below basic, as determined by California Standardized Tests (CSTs). Students receive 30 minute tutoring sessions a minimum of three times per week for up to 50 hours of direct instruction. Training is comprehensive, on-going, and focuses on research-based tutoring strategies, effective literacy development and behavior management. Additionally, members receive training related to Civic Engagement, conflict resolution, cultural diversity, leadership, CPR and First Aid, disability inclusion, community awareness, and Spanish or English language development.
