Kentucky Service Corps

Kentucky Service Corps (KSC) AmeriCorps members will be current college students, college graduates, or citizens who will apply academic knowledge to provide needed services through placements at non-profits, local or regional government agencies, or educational settings. College students can serve through an internship, practicum, student teaching or other program provided by their college/university. Examples of placements include student teaching in a distressed school; working with veterans to access services; leading support groups on various health issues; teaching job skills to people with developmental disabilities. College members will complete either a 300 hour or a 450 hour term of service. All members will receive training and will participate in reflection with other members throughout the state. At the end of service, members will receive an education award voucher to pay back college loans or to use for the cost of college. Placements are throughout the state of Kentucky in conjunction with colleges and universities that are members of Kentucky Campus Compact.

Member Duties : KSC AmeriCorps members will work in one service topic area where they have studied and have knowledge that can be shared with the community. For instance, a senior social work student might complete an internship in a rehabilitation center and lead support groups of people who are overcoming addictions but cannot afford to go to a residential setting. Or, a junior nursing student might complete a practicum to assist people with low incomes to get well baby checkups and immunizations. Or, a college graduate may serve high school youth, helping them complete high school and go on to postsecondary education. While each member will focus on sharing their specific knowledge, all members will learn about the community in which they are serving and about the importance of being an active citizen.
