Center for Wooden Boats/Cama Beach

In 1968, Seattle architect Dick Wagner, and his wife Colleen, began a traditional boat rental out of their own houseboat. By 1976 the idea of a small craft museum was born and 1977 saw the first Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival. In 1988 the Center was established as a non-profit. Boat livery began in 1983, and sailing instruction program began in 1989. CWB now has 65,000 visitors per year, 2,500 members, 450 active volunteers who collectively log over 25,000 hours a year, around twenty paid staff and a fleet of over 120 historic craft which are displayed on the south shore of Lake Union, in the heart of Seattle and the boathouse at Cama Beach State Park on Camano Island. Admission has always been free. CWB’s mission is to “to provide a gathering place where maritime history comes alive through direct experience and our small craft heritage is enjoyed, preserved, and passed along to future generations.” About 400 students take classes learning everything from sailing to boat-building to painting each year, plus 3000 kids get on the water through our field trip programs and skiff rowing classes. Community members participate in our family programs, our volunteer program, and other events. The Mother’s Day Saturday Sail, CWB at Cama’s signature event, draws nearly 3,000 day visitors for free rides on historic vessels. In 2008 Cama Beach State Park opened to the public with CWB mandated to provide its brand of maritime heritage education at the new park. For the past three years CWB’s programs at Cama Beach have grown in number and popularity. People come each year to learn maritime skills, enjoy a day on the water, or participate in CWB’s youth and adult programs. Each year CWB at Cama Beach experiments with new programs and reaches out to new audiences. The pristine waters of Saratoga Passage—teaming with salmon, seals, whales, and other creatures—offers an ideal classroom in which to blend outdoor education, maritime history, and environmental science.

Member Duties : The Youth Educator at Cama Beach will work with Cama’s Site Manager to plan, schedule, and teach both indoor and outdoor field trips for students from pre-school through high school. Many programs are taught on the water in our traditional boats. During events and during summer months, the Youth Educator will work with and supervise youth interns and volunteers. The ideal Youth Educator finds joy in teaching and has strong organizational skills, and an awareness of safety. Strong written and verbal communication is a must, as is a demonstrated ability to solve problems. The Youth Educator will work with a wide variety of youth. Individual initiative as well as strong team work are both key to this position. Outdoor education experience is required. Sailing, boatbuilding, and/or powerboat handling are skills highly desirable. Because CWB covers a wide scope of activities which vary by season, the AmeriCorps member will be involved in a wide range of projects.
