CASE AmeriCorps Kids' Day Project

Harris County Department of Education began the Cooperative for After-School Enrichment division, CASE, in 1999 to increase the number of after-school programs and improve the quality of existing after-school programs. CASE mobilizes the community to work together to ensure that every child in Harris County (greater Houston area) who can benefit from an after-school program has access to one. Mission: We are committed to building partnerships, providing resources, leadership and training that support quality after-school programs in Harris County. AmeriCorps members will support CASE to address the need for quality project-based after-school activities. CASE works with businesses and community organizations to design Kids Day projects that focus on a particular topic, such as robotics, medicine, drama, or photography. For a typical Kids Day project, students receive hands-on lessons through an 8-10 week curriculum aligned with state educational standards for math, science, literacy or art. Students design a product or service based on the particular topic and on Kids Day, the culminating event, students demonstrate the skills learned during after-school activities. Following is an example of a Kids Day project that CASE proposes for the AmeriCorps program: Ready-Set-Serve is a service learning project that follows the Texas service learning model S.T.A.R.S. (Student Initiative, Thoughtful Service, Authentic Learning, Reflective Practice and Substantive Partnerships). After-school coordinators have received the S.T.A.R.S. training, which provides a framework for after-school programs to engage in service learning training with their students during the school year. Each program will recruit community organizations, volunteers and professionals to participate in the Kids Day service that was designed by their neighborhood after-school students. The combined effort will contribute 250 hours of service to the community.
