Arts Education VISTA

The University of West Alabama has partnered with the Coleman Center for the Arts in York for a VISTA program that addresses many poverty-related issues throughout our region of the state. Arts education is an area of public education that is severely underfunded due to the economic poverty of the region, and the work of this VISTA will help to change that. The Coleman Center for the Arts (CCA) is a contemporary arts organization in York, Alabama. The organization uses contemporary art to foster positive social change, answer civic needs, build local pride, and use creativity for community problem solving. The CCA's programs include a community based artist-in-residence program that produces socially engaged public art projects; an exhibition program that features the work of local artists as well as regional and national artists completing CCA projects; and an education program that offers year round educational opportunities for area youth. The Education Coordinator will strengthen the capacity of the CCA's education program, which provides students with access to arts instruction and critical thinking. The program includes Art Club, an after school opportunity for students ages 12-18 to build skills in visual thinking and gain pre-college experience, and Camp, a summer program for youth ages 8 to 18. VISTA will also work with visiting artists to develope innovative programs and facilitate the artist's work in the area.
