College Advising Corps

CAC expands access to postsecondary pathways by placing trained AmeriCorps volunteers in high schools across Georgia, Texas, and California’s Central Valley. Serving as full-time advisers, volunteers provide individualized guidance to help students explore educational and career pathways, navigate applications and financial aid, and develop actionable plans for life after high school. Volunteers support students in identifying their interests and goals while exploring pathways that include college, technical training, apprenticeships, military service, and employment. Through advising sessions, classroom presentations, workshops, and family engagement, volunteers help students navigate admissions, scholarships, FAFSA completion when appropriate, enrollment, and the transition to postsecondary opportunities. Volunteers also connect students with relevant school and community resources and collaborate with educators, families, and community partners to strengthen student support. To ensure program effectiveness, volunteers document advising activities, monitor student progress, track milestones and outcomes, and use data to guide outreach and support. Volunteers complete required service hours, training, professional development, and reporting while adhering to AmeriCorps requirements, CAC policies, and school and district guidelines. CAC's AmeriCorps volunteers must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, meet program eligibility requirements, and demonstrate a commitment to student success and educational equity. Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, sound judgment, confidentiality, professionalism, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are essential to effective service. Through these activities, College Advising Corps empowers students from under-resourced communities to overcome barriers, access postsecondary opportunities, and pursue their educational and career aspirations.
