Just Who I Am Specialist VISTA

Just Who I Am (JWIA) is a nonprofit organization serving youth, families, and economically disadvantaged communities throughout Los Angeles. JWIA works to expand access to education, mentorship, leadership development, workforce opportunities, and community resources for individuals and families facing barriers associated with poverty and economic insecurity. Low-income youth, foster youth, and families may experience barriers including limited access to educational enrichment and mentoring, unemployment or underemployment, limited career pathways, transportation challenges, housing instability, food insecurity, and difficulty accessing community resources. These barriers can limit opportunities for educational, economic, and personal advancement. The AmeriCorps VISTA project will strengthen JWIA’s capacity to address these barriers by developing sustainable systems for community outreach, partnership development, program data and evaluation, and resource development. The VISTA will create tools, processes, and systems that can be maintained by JWIA staff beyond the service term. Stronger outreach and communications systems will help JWIA increase awareness of programs and resources among low-income youth and families. Partnership systems will help JWIA build relationships with schools, nonprofits, businesses, and community organizations that can expand access to educational, workforce, and community resources. Data and evaluation systems will improve JWIA’s ability to track participation, outcomes, and impact. Resource-development systems will strengthen the organization’s ability to identify funding opportunities and sustain programs serving economically disadvantaged communities. Together, these capacity-building activities will help JWIA develop sustainable infrastructure to increase access to opportunities and resources for low-income youth and families throughout Los Angeles.
