Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area AmeriCorps

The Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area (AFNHA) AmeriCorps program invites dedicated individuals to live and serve in the beautiful mountains of West Virginia. Operating across 16-counties in WV, this program empowers members to partner with local agencies and non-profits to protect the environment and support rural community development. Joining the AFNHA team offers a unique opportunity to gain professional experience toward careers in conservation, cultural heritage, or communications, with the next cohort beginning in September 2026. Members choose from a variety of positions tailored to their interests. The conservation track focuses on vital field work, including tree plantings, invasive species control, and ecosystem monitoring. The community heritage track involves historic preservation, museum collection management, and community development. For those interested in education, positions are available to lead interpretive tours, manage outreach, and create educational media like exhibits, signs, and digital content. All positions incorporate volunteer management and capacity building. In exchange for service, members receive a living allowance, professional training, and health coverage and childcare assistance if eligible. Upon successful completion, members receive an education award, a completion bonus, and a West Virginia Tuition Waiver. The program terms permit working another job or attending school during off-hours, though a personal vehicle is highly recommended. A college degree or significant life experience is preferred. Member Duties : AFNHA AmeriCorps members engage in hands-on service with local agencies and non-profits to conserve mountain ecosystems and enhance rural cultural heritage. In conservation roles, members protect forest health by conducting tree plantings, controlling invasive species, and monitoring local ecosystems. Those focused on community heritage manage museum collections, assist with historic preservation, and support rural revitalization. Members also drive stewardship education by designing and conducting interpretive tours, youth programs, and community outreach events. Additionally, they create impactful communication materials like exhibits, signs, and digital media to share local stories.
