Ending Hunger Corps Circular Food Systems Vista

Love working with elementary school students and passionate about reducing wasted food - here’s chance to do both in beautiful Maine! As the Ending Hunger Corps Circular Food Systems VISTA will join a larger cohort working to end hunger across Maine and help implement Maine’s plan to end hunger by 2030. A strong partnership between Food Rescue MAINE (University of Maine food waste solutions research program) and the Department of Education – Child Nutrition was formed in 2023 to ensure that Maine school meals feed students not the landfill. The specific, measurable goals of the Maine School Cafeteria “No More Wasted Food” Program is to reduce wasted food and to increase student nutrition. To meet these goals, we have developed a new “No More Wasted Food” School DIY Toolkit which has been successfully tested in seven Maine school districts throughout the state. With results showing an average of 25% reduction in wasted food and up to 60% decrease in fruit & veggie waste, schools are very interested in implementing this program. The project will be implemented statewide so you will work with a very diverse group of small and large schools with high rates of free and reduced lunch students. With Maine’s high levels of food insecurity with 1 in 5 children going hungry as well as escalating school budget pressures putting child nutrition at risk, it is urgent to stop throwing away perfectly good, edible food in school cafeterias. Working with school teams - principals, nutrition staff, students, custodians – you will help drive meaningful and lasting food system change in line with the state’s goal to reduce wasted food by 50% by 2030.
