Capital IDEA Houston Marketing & Comms Teleservice VISTA

The mission of Houston’s Capital Investing in Development and Employment of Adults, Inc (Capital IDEA Houston, or CIH) is to invest in underemployed adults by funding educational pathways to attain thriving careers and financial self-sufficiency. Our vision is for our participants to achieve educational success and economic stability for themselves and their families. CIH empowers underemployed, low-wage adults by removing barriers to postsecondary education, credentialing, and living-wage careers. Many participants are single parents, first-generation college students, and working adults balancing childcare, transportation, and financial instability. CIH addresses these challenges through comprehensive tuition assistance, wraparound support, and personalized coaching provided by Pathway Navigators. CIH has served more than 1,100 participants and placed over 675 graduates into careers with an average wage increase from $7.25 per hour at entry to more than $26 per hour post-completion. CIH’s outcomes far exceed national benchmarks, with an 85% semester-to-semester persistence rate and a54% graduation rate. In Houston, 14% of households live below the federal poverty line, and an additional 33% fall within the ALICE (Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, Employed) threshold - working but unable to afford basic necessities and ineligible for public assistance (United Way, 2022). Families experiencing financial precarity struggle to afford childcare, transportation, food, and further education -critical supports that determine whether they can pursue higher-wage employment.
