Stewards VISTA:Hatfield and McCoy Foundation WV Y1

The Hatfield and McCoy Foundation is a nonprofit organization based in Logan County, West Virginia, dedicated to preserving Appalachian history while promoting heritage tourism, education, cultural preservation, and economic opportunity throughout southern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky. The Foundation operates the historic Hatfield & McCoy Homeplace and Museum, located near the renowned Hatfield-McCoy Trail System, and works with schools, nonprofits, tourism agencies, and community partners to celebrate regional history and strengthen local communities. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will support efforts to expand the Foundation’s capacity to serve visitors, community members, and regional partners. The member will develop systems that strengthen museum operations, volunteer engagement, visitor services, educational programming, and community outreach. Responsibilities may include creating outreach materials, creating communication toolkits and social media templates, organizing volunteer resources, developing event-planning tools focused on Appalachian history, culture, and heritage tourism. The member may also develop resources for staff on building partnerships with schools, tourism organizations, community groups, and local leaders to increase awareness of the museum and expand opportunities for educational and cultural programming. Through these efforts, the VISTA member will help strengthen the Foundation’s long-term sustainability and community impact. Logan County offers affordable living, scenic mountain landscapes, outdoor recreation opportunities, and direct access to the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System. Members will gain valuable experience serving with nonprofit leaders, educators, tourism professionals, and community partners while contributing to heritage preservation and economic development efforts throughout Appalachia.
