Stewards VISTA: Appalshop - Film Creative Economy

Appalshop is a nationally recognized nonprofit arts and media organization based in Whitesburg, Kentucky, dedicated to documenting, preserving, and amplifying Appalachian stories through film, radio, music, theater, education, and community engagement. Since 1969, Appalshop has supported regional artists and creators while providing a platform for voices and perspectives often overlooked by mainstream media. Through its film program, Appalshop is working to strengthen the Appalachian film ecosystem and expand opportunities for filmmakers across Eastern Kentucky. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will build the capacity for staff to support regional film production and creative economic development. The member will research and map film-related assets throughout the region, including filmmakers, videographers, editors, sound technicians, venues, equipment resources, funders, fiscal sponsors, and other production partners. They will also develop a tracking system for staff to organize information about film production resources and incentives, develop resource guides and outreach materials, and create tools that make it easier for filmmakers to navigate production opportunities in Kentucky. In addition, the member will support the development of systems and resources that staff will use with Appalshop-affiliated filmmakers and community partners, including contact databases, workflow templates, grant calendar templates, screening resources, and community engagement materials. The member may also develop outreach materials related to film screenings, workshops, public discussions, and other community-based programs. Whitesburg offers a welcoming small-town environment, a vibrant arts and music scene, rich Appalachian culture, and easy access to outdoor recreation. Individuals interested in supporting independent media, creative economies, and community storytelling are encouraged to apply. For more information, contact Stewards Individual Placements.
