Ending Hunger Corps Sr Farmshare VISTA
 
 
 
Breakdown barriers to food access for Senior Citizens as the Ending Hunger Corps Senior Programming VISTA! In this position you will support and promote the Maine Senior Farmshare Program (MSFP) and Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) throughout the State of Maine by providing means of outreach, education and enrollment assistance to income-eligible Mainers, working with farmers and program partners to maximize the reach of these programs to vulnerable older adults. Together these programs provide a “share” - $50 worth - of fresh, local produce from Maine farmers at no cost and USDA nutritious foods to those eligible under requirements as set by USDA’s Food and Nutrition Services. This Ending Hunger Corps Member will increase awareness and participation through development of an awareness and registration program to maximize resources and increase the population served. The VISTA will experience Maine by travelling to farms and community centers meeting potential program participants, while personally learning about agriculture, food security issues and poverty issues that exacerbate food insecurity in both rural and urban areas in Maine. This VISTA will join an active and supportive cohort serving throughout Maine, together actively impacting the future end of hunger in accord with Maine’s legislated plan, “Everyone at the table: Maine’s Roadmap to End Hunger by 2030”. In addition to the benefit of gaining valuable experience of working for a state government agency and learning how Federal policy shapes state government programs, you will join a cohort working to end hunger across the State of Maine that meets a minimum of monthly, with regular training events and professional development opportunities.

Member Duties : The Ending Hunger Corps Senior Programming VISTA will build capacity within Maine Senior Farmshare Program (MSFP) and Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) by increasing participation and food access. MSFP provides eligible Mainers with a $50 share of produce from Maine farms while CSFP provides older Mainers with USDA nutritious foods. The VISTA will build capacity by developing materials, recruiting, and training the volunteers to serve as Ambassadors in ways to lower barriers for participants. Ambassadors will provide outreach and referrals to help older Mainers enroll, including explaining MSFP and CSFP, directing seniors on registration, scheduling appointments or connecting people with partners.
