Stewards VISTA: Village of Corning Y2

The Village of Corning, Ohio is a small Appalachian community with a history rooted in coal mining and rail development. The village is pursuing targeted redevelopment efforts to restore infrastructure and improve access to municipal services. Located near Burr Oak State Park and the Buckeye Trail, Corning is positioned to leverage recreation-based economic opportunities as part of its revitalization strategy. This AmeriCorps VISTA position supports a priority redevelopment initiative focused on strengthening the village’s internal capacity to pursue funding and plan for the acquisition and rehabilitation of a permanent municipal facility. As a former mining community, portions of the village are located on legacy mine land, requiring organized documentation and internal planning tools to support Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization (AMLER) and other public-sector funding opportunities. Activities focus on developing internal systems, organizing documentation, and creating planning and grant development tools that village staff will use to carry out implementation. The VISTA will also expand funding research resources to support future public works and infrastructure projects. Ideal candidates possess strong research, writing, organization, and analytical skills, and an interest in community development or rural revitalization. The position offers hands-on learning related to funding readiness, capital planning, and public-sector processes. Members will have access to AmeriCorps VISTA professional development resources and opportunities to network with regional partners. Service in Corning offers the opportunity to make a visible impact in a close-knit rural community. For those relocating, the area provides a low cost of living, access to outdoor recreation, and a supportive small-town environment.
