WSU: Field Gleaning Summer Associate

The Community Health and Food Access Program at WSU Clallam County Extension works to increase equitable access to healthy, affordable food for residents of the North Olympic Peninsula. The program addresses both immediate food security needs and long term food system challenges by strengthening the connections between local farms, food banks, schools, and community partners. Through coordinated food recovery, farm to food bank purchasing, school garden initiatives, nutrition education, and hunger relief network support, the program improves the availability, quality, and distribution of nutritious food for households experiencing food insecurity. The Summer Associate will get a sampling of all aspects of the program, but will focus mainly on a core component of the program, gleaning, which rescues surplus produce from farms, orchards, school gardens, and residential growers for distribution through food banks and other food access sites. The gleaning program coordinates volunteers, works directly with growers, and manages harvest logistics to recover fresh, locally grown food that might otherwise go unused. Gleaned produce is sorted, tracked, and directed for fresh distribution, kitchen use, or preservation, helping reduce food waste while increasing access to nutritious food across Clallam County. WSU Clallam County Extension partners with Harvest Against Hunger through the Harvest VISTA program, which mobilizes AmeriCorps members to develop and strengthen community food security programs. As part of this effort, AmeriCorps Summer Associate program supports Harvest Against Hungers' mission to cultivate, strengthen and connect food system partners to ensure healthy food for people in need. Over a 10-week service term, Summer Associates help reduce food waste and expand access to nutritious food during the growing season.
