FISH: Picnic in the Park Summer Associate

Picnic in the Park exists to feed low-income children through the summer. It is administered by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction in Washington State (OSPI) and sponsored by FISH. As a sponsor, FISH distributes thousands of meals to hundreds of children during the short weeks of summer. We provide meals for children without enough food to eat due to the lack of free/reduced breakfast and lunch during that time, helping reduce household food costs and supporting a pathway out of poverty for families experiencing food insecurity. FISH provides these meals in boxes holding a week’s worth of food each. Clients pick up boxes at distribution sites throughout the county. Extensive administration and recordkeeping allow FISH to be reimbursed for these meals. The program’s goals include: Feeding every child who needs food – regardless of any category or requirement Providing healthy meals using School Meal (OSPI) regulations Creating a solid working team for the summer Keeping costs low FISH partners with Harvest Against Hunger through the Harvest VISTA program, which mobilizes AmeriCorps members to develop and strengthen community food security programs. As part of this effort, AmeriCorps Summer Associate program supports Harvest Against Hunger’s mission to cultivate, strengthen and connect food system partners to ensure healthy food for people in need. Over a 10-week service term, Summer Associates help reduce food waste and expand access to nutritious food during the growing season.
