PFTP: Urban Orchard Summer Associate

Our mission is to increase access to healthful food and strengthen communities by empowering neighbors to share in the harvest and care of city-grown produce. We envision joyful communities that see every fruit tree as an abundant resource which contributes to a just food system and enhances the well-being of people, community networks, habitat, and our changing climate. Summer is the most fun time to be a part of Portland Fruit Tree Project since it is HARVEST SEASON! We are excited to welcome someone as passionate about community based regenerative agriculture and green spaces and is motivated to strengthen organizational capacity through engaging across a wide array of programming based on skills, interests, and organizational needs. Portland Fruit Tree Project partners with Harvest Against Hunger through the Harvest VISTA program, which mobilizes AmeriCorps members to develop and strengthen community food security programs. As part of this effort, AmeriCorps Summer Associate program supports Harvest Against Hunger’s mission to cultivate, strengthen, and connect food system partners to ensure healthy food for people in need. Over a 10-week service term, Summer Associates help reduce food waste and expand access to nutritious food during the growing season.

Member Duties : The Summer Associate will expand our capacity to harvest, steward, and distribute fresh fruit to community partners serving households experiencing food insecurity. The Summer Associate will support pruning, pest management, and summer tree care at residential sites and community orchards to increase tree health and yield. They will assist with and co-lead volunteer harvests and orchard work parties, helping train community members in safe harvesting practices, and complete small, solo harvests during peak season to ensure fruit is picked at optimal quality and donated quickly. They will also support outreach and tabling efforts to recruit new harvest hosts, volunteers, and community partners, strengthening equitable access to fresh fruit.
