Summer Associate - Sunrise Homeless Navigation Center

The City of Austin AmeriCorps VISTA Program works with City departments and local nonprofits to build capacity, in order to provide resources and services to the Austin neighborhoods and communities that may otherwise be left behind by Austin's historic disparities and future growth. The AmeriCorps members serving with the City of Austin AmeriCorps VISTA Program work in such diverse fields as education, health, legal services, and housing to cover the myriad ways poverty affects these neighborhoods and communities.

Member Duties : Food distribution is the first step to food security, which is vital to alleviate poverty as people can’t improve their situation until their most basic needs are met. It also brings clients to the center, where they can then learn about Sunrise’s more long-term services, such as nutrition classes and medication management. Summer Associates will evaluate the flow of in-kind donations, such as food, from donors to clients for seasonal suitability and develop effective ways of communicating donation needs to donors. Food distribution occurs outside where temperatures can often be over 100 degrees, so Summer Associates will also implement measures under Sunrise’s C40 Cooling Pop Up Program that ensure clients can safely receive food and other services by mitigating the health risks of the summer sun.
