26-27 VISTA for Increasing Access to Justice Across Wyoming
 
 
 
The goal of this VISTA project is to alleviate poverty by increasing access to justice, which can allow individuals to resolve their legal issues even if they cannot afford an attorney. Access to justice encompasses representation in court, reduction of legal barriers to service, and ready availability of information and resources, all of which help people protect their livelihoods, health, homes, and families, and in turn stabilize communities. Equal Justice Wyoming (EJW) produces and disseminates self-help legal resources and supports access-to-justice initiatives. The VISTA Member will be involved in finalizing a state-wide legal needs assessment, as well as strengthening legal service events and volunteer management systems. These initiatives are designed to provide increased access to justice in order to expand EJW’s capacity to serve low-income individuals and provide increased access to the courts. EJW is partnering with Legal Aid of Wyoming, Inc. (LAW) to host this VISTA position. LAW is a non-profit law firm providing free legal help to low-income individuals in Wyoming. The VISTA Member will alleviate poverty by maximizing the provision of legal services to those living in, or in danger of falling into, poverty. This service opportunity is available without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age, religion, sexual orientation, disability, political affiliation, marital or parental status, genetic information, or military service. This program is available to all and specific accessibility needs will be addressed on a case-by-case scenario. Background checks will be required before service and may be repeated during service.

Member Duties : 1. Collaborate with our team, legal aid providers, and community partners to share the results of our legal needs assessment with stakeholders. Increase capacity by informing services and directing resources to areas of greatest need. 2. Assess recent outreach efforts and develop a plan to improve the impact of outreach for our events and resources. Increase capacity by helping us reach more community members. 3. Develop procedures to update our volunteer management system, allowing for more efficient oversight both internally and with partners at the College of Law. Increase capacity by improving the sustainability of our volunteer systems. 4. Take part in developing and refining official court forms. Increase capacity by improving the quality and accessibility of forms. 5. Strengthen Wills Clinic coordination to allow for more events in rural communities. Increase capacity by streamlining the provision of services.
