Access to Justice Through Innovation and Legal Resources

The goal of this VISTA project is to alleviate poverty by increasing access to justice, which can allow individuals to resolve their legal issues even if they cannot afford an attorney. Access to justice encompasses representation in court, reduction of legal barriers to service, and ready availability of information and resources, all of which help people protect their livelihoods, health, homes, and families, and in turn stabilize communities. The intention for this VISTA role is to increase capacity for the University of Wyoming College of Law to provide new online and print legal resources for those in need, expand collaborations between the College of Law community and Equal Justice Wyoming, and promote innovative solutions to access to justice problems. This project will serve low-income, veteran, elderly, youth, and adult populations. The VISTA will curate, collaborate, research, write, and promote resources that improve access to legal information. The VISTA will help break the cycle of poverty by improving services that allow individuals to find free or low-cost solutions to their unmet legal concerns. The VISTA will build capacity by ensuring that services meet the needs of the community and by increasing awareness of available services. The VISTA’s efforts will result in a children’s law library, improved LiveChat services, legal resource guides, client materials for an Early Dispute Resolution Program, and an internal report on how artificial intelligence could be used to improve access to justice. This service opportunity is available without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age, religion, sexual orientation, disability, political affiliation, marital or parental status, genetic information, or military service. This program is available to all and specific accessibility needs will be addressed on a case-by-case scenario. Background checks will be required before service and may be repeated during service.
