Stewards VISTA: Appalshop Year 1

Appalshop is a community-based arts, culture, and media organization rooted in Eastern Kentucky. For over 50 years, we have used film, radio, theater, music, and digital storytelling to support Appalachian people in telling their own stories, building creative and technical skills, and connecting those skills to workforce development and economic opportunity. We play a key role in advancing community development, workforce pathways, and cultural preservation across the region. This position is based in Whitesburg, Kentucky, a small, tight-knit Appalachian town known for its strong creative community, natural beauty, and deep tradition of mutual support. The area offers a unique opportunity to engage directly with local residents and contribute to meaningful, place-based work. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will develop workshops for staff to implement in media production and community storytelling programs; and strengthen systems for outreach, volunteer engagement, and data tracking. They will also develop outreach plans for staff to build partnerships with schools, libraries, workforce organizations, and local employers to expand pathways to jobs, internships, and leadership opportunities. We are seeking candidates who are organized, collaborative, and committed to community-centered work, with strong communication skills and an interest in arts, media, or workforce development. Project dates: July 2026 – July 2027. To learn more, visit Appalshop’s website. Relocating members should expect a rural setting with a vibrant arts network and strong sense of community.
