NLADA Communications and Engagement VISTA (TX, MI, NY)

Neighborhood Defender Service (NDS) is a national nonprofit public defense organization that provides holistic, community-based legal representation to individuals and families impacted by the criminal legal system. Through integrated criminal, civil, family, and reentry advocacy, NDS works to ensure access to justice for individuals and families experiencing poverty and involvement with the legal system Effective public defense depends not only on strong legal advocacy but also on clear communication that helps communities understand available services and helps partners and supporters understand the impact of this work. Strengthening communications infrastructure allows the organization to consistently share information about programs, highlight the experiences of the communities it serves, and raise awareness of holistic defense services. The Communications & Engagement VISTA will help strengthen the organization’s communications infrastructure by developing systems and tools that support storytelling, digital engagement, and public communications. The VISTA member will assist in organizing website content, developing social media and communications templates, creating graphics and digital materials, and helping draft press and public communications about the organization’s work. By building communications workflows, templates, and tools that can be used across offices, the VISTA will help ensure that the organization can consistently communicate the impact of holistic public defense and increase awareness of legal services available to communities impacted by poverty. The VISTA member will serve at one of Neighborhood Defender Service’s offices in Harlem (NY), Detroit (MI), or Hays County (TX). Members must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the assigned host site.
