NLADA Grant Writer VISTA- (TX, MI, NY)

Neighborhood Defender Service (NDS) is a national nonprofit public defense organization that provides holistic, community-based legal representation to individuals & families impacted by the criminal legal system. Through integrated criminal, civil, family, & reentry advocacy, NDS works to ensure access to justice for individuals & families experiencing poverty & involvement with the legal system Public defense programs are chronically underfunded, & many critical services rely on philanthropic support to remain accessible & effective. Strengthening development infrastructure allows NDS to sustain holistic defense services while enabling attorneys & advocates to focus on client representation. Many components of holistic public defense, including civil legal services, eviction defense, immigration advocacy, & reentry support, rely on philanthropic funding to remain accessible & sustainable. Institutional grants from foundations & other funders play an essential role in supporting these services. The Grant Writing & Institutional Fundraising VISTA will help strengthen the organization’s capacity to pursue & manage institutional funding. The VISTA member will research potential foundation funders, organize funder information, & help develop proposal & reporting tools that support the organization’s fundraising efforts. The member will also help develop standardized proposal language & templates that improve how NDS communicates program impact to philanthropic partners. By strengthening grant research systems, proposal development processes, & institutional fundraising infrastructure, the VISTA will help ensure that the organization can sustain & expand holistic public defense programs serving communities impacted by poverty. The VISTA member will serve at one of Neighborhood Defender Service’s offices in Harlem (NY), Detroit (MI), or Hays County (TX). Members must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the assigned host site.
