Summer Associate - Environmental Education Fellow

The Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group (HCSEG) is a nonprofit organization at the Salmon Center in Belfair, WA. HCSEG deepens the connection between land, people, and salmon. This happens through restoration, education, and research. HCSEG is located on a re-purposed family farm on the tip of the Hood Canal. The campus includes 38 acres of organic produce gardens, farm animals, a classroom, and trail access to the Union River Estuary Preserve. Because many rural economies rely on healthy ecosystems (including fisheries, agriculture, and outdoor recreation) degraded habitat, compromised food systems, and limited access to environmental education can contribute to further economic instability. Summer Associates at HCSEG are supporting AmeriCorps VISTA's poverty-alleviating mission by delivering high-quality environmental education to youth from low-income, rural communities, and Title I schools. Students are introduced to careers in the environmental field with family sustaining salaries. In this way, the program provides local youth a pathway out of poverty. Member Duties : Environmental Education Fellows will assist with Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group’s youth education programs focused on watershed health, salmon recovery, sustainable agriculture, and ecosystem stewardship. HCSEG’s summer programs, including Explore the Fjord and Farm Stewards, are offered on a sliding scale and serve students from low-income, rural communities and attending Title I schools. The goal of these programs is to open students’ eyes to future careers in the environmental field with family-sustaining salaries and to prepare the next generation of stewards for the environmental questions they will one day inherit. Fellows will coordinate and educate students in the field and support program outreach. Fellows will lead public interpretation of HCSEG sites to encourage community support for HCSEG programs. Opportunities to assist with other HCSEG programs will be provided with the goal that fellows translate their experiences into hands-on learning opportunities for youth.
