2026 GPCC | Housing Action Corps | Housing Development
 
 
 
The Affordable Housing Development VISTA will serve with Garfield Park Community Council in Chicago, IL from September 2026-2027. Garfield Park Community Council (GPCC) is part of Housing Action Corps, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. Housing Action Corps members receive custom training, support, and networking opportunities in housing and community development, in addition to the traditional benefits of AmeriCorps VISTA. Learn more: housingactionil.org/americorps. GPCC is a community-building organization working to increase and maintain affordable housing in the Garfield Park community on the West Side of Chicago. GPCC offers housing counseling and emergency housing support, owns a 40-unit affordable senior housing building, and is working to reoccupy vacant homes and expand our housing development activities. The Affordable Housing Development VISTA will work closely with the Executive Director and community stakeholders to develop plans to acquire and rehab existing multifamily rental properties to preserve them as affordable rental housing. Our ideal candidate is excited to learn about real estate and affordable housing development. Knowledge of Excel and experience with real estate, finance, data management, and community engagement are all preferred, but not required. The position will interface with community volunteers, partners, real estate brokers, developers, and organizational staff and board, so candidates must demonstrate effective communication and presentation skills. This position offers a $400 monthly supplemental benefit.

Member Duties : GPCC’s housing programs are tailored to meet the needs of low- to moderate-income individuals, including housing providers, homeowners, tenants, and community investors. The Affordable Housing Development VISTA will conduct research and generate resources that will help residents maintain their homes, while also supporting GPCC in expanding our inventory of affordable rental units. They will also increase our outreach to potential community partners for developing and preserving multifamily buildings, as well as with local community members who want to volunteer or advocate for improved housing conditions in Garfield Park. The VISTA will accomplish a range of activities to expand affordable housing development and community engagement, including research, project design, relationship building, resource development, and the coordination of community workshops.
