2026 GACDC | Housing Action Corps | Volunteer Coordinator

The Overnight Warming Location Volunteer Coordinator will serve with the Greater Alton Community Development Corporation in Alton, IL, from September 2026-2027. Greater Alton Community Development Corporation (GACDC) is part of Housing Action Corps, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. Housing Action Corps members receive custom training, support, and networking opportunities in housing and community development, in addition to the traditional benefits of AmeriCorps VISTA. Learn more: housingactionil.org/americorps. Greater Alton Community Development Corporation (GACDC) is revitalizing Alton, IL and the Riverbend region by fostering economic growth, promoting affordable housing, and building social equity through collaborative partnerships, sustainable practices, and innovative solutions that address the unique needs of each neighborhood. One of GACDC’s three strategic priorities is homeless service coordination, which is a growing need in Madison County. We operate three emergency winter shelters, or Overnight Warming Locations (OWLs), that are facilitated by 300+ volunteers each year. The OWL Volunteer Coordinator will help us expand our services to more sites and reach more community members by enhancing volunteer training, recruitment, and retention. They will also research and develop a database or application of resources to streamline service coordination for people experiencing homelessness. Our ideal candidate brings experience in the field of social work, particularly in service coordination and/or volunteer management. We’re looking for candidates with strong communication, organization, and networking skills, who have training in or are ready to learn about deescalation, crisis intervention, and motivational interviewing. They should demonstrate experience collaborating with vulnerable populations and comfort with group facilitation. This position offers a $700 monthly stipend.

Member Duties : GACDC is the only CDC in all of Madison County, a largely suburban community across the river from St. Louis, MO. We do not have enough shelter beds to address the rising number of unhoused residents, and our OWLs are reaching beyond their capacity to meet the need. The OWL Volunteer Coordinator will enhance the training and support for our OWL volunteer network, develop partnerships to expand OWL sites and resources, and collect feedback from volunteers and OWL guests to identify needs. They will also expand partnerships with service providers and research strategies to implement a database or application of resources to support service coordination. They will also develop strategies to increase ongoing engagement and advocacy opportunities for unhoused community members outside of the winter season.
