Summer Associate Community Outreach and Research VISTA DC

The Rural Investment Project is designed to close the investment and opportunity gap between rural and metropolitan communities. While planning, stakeholder engagement, and capital deployment often concentrate in cities, rural places are left with fewer pathways to investment, thinner civic infrastructure, and limited access to essentials. This creates “forced mobility” as residents travel into metro areas for basic needs like employment and groceries. This project advances a model that (1) treats rural residents and leaders as co-designers by building a shared understanding through convening and data collection, and (2) translates that learning into implementable and scalable investment strategies using a new Rural Investment Fund. This program is hosted by the Coalition in the District of Colombia. The Coalition is an economic development and housing coalition based in DC which serves the district and the surrounding area.

Member Duties : Over a 10-week summer term, the Summer Associate VISTA will help execute Phase 1 and lay the groundwork for Phase 2 by supporting deep community and stakeholder engagement alongside disciplined research and synthesis. The VISTAs will assist with outreach and convening logistics, help design and field interview/survey/focus group tools, and support engagement across three stakeholder groups. Later in the term the VISTAs will shift into analysis and deliverables: cleaning and organizing qualitative and quantitative inputs, coding interview notes, synthesizing findings into priority themes and investment barriers.
